Singer, songwriter, actor and educator Mariama Whyte will entertain us with an evening of song and stories in a private home. Mariama has wowed audiences in leading roles with the Broadway national tours of The Lion King and The Color Purple and in numerous productions with The Cleveland Playhouse and Karamu House, where she recently performed in Simply Simone: The Music of Nina Simone. She also performed a special Nina Simone tribute at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in honor of Simone’s 2018 induction. Mariama has performed on the Oprah Winfrey Show, shared the stage with famed music producer David Foster, Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child, and enjoys performing at Cleveland venues like Nighttown and the Bop Stop. She has also had success as a recording artist, in modeling and in independent films. While growing up in Shaker, Mariama honed her musical and acting skills at Karamu House, Music School Settlement, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Shaker Heights High School where she served as concertmaster of the Shaker Orchestra. Mariama loves working with youth and is currently a teaching artist with Playhouse Square. She has also served as a teaching artist for Cleveland Play House and Cleveland Public Theatre. Mariama is the sister of Shaker Heights Middle School principal Miata Hunter, Class of ‘92, and is the proud parent of a Shaker Middle School student.
